While it’s well known that acupuncture does wonders managing general pain, promoting relaxation, and supporting one’s fertility journey, you may be unaware of the myriad of conditions this awesome, ancient modality can address. Clients who call to ask us about holistic treatment options are often surprised to hear about the various ways acupuncture itself can support their health journey. Today, we’re looking at three areas that often get overlooked for this versatile treatment option!

1) Seasonal Allergies

As we move full-swing into the Spring season, conditions such as the common cold and hay fever tend to spike. Common culprits like dry eyes, nasal congestion, sinus headaches, and sore throats abound. Luckily, acupuncture does wonders for seasonal allergy sufferers!

Effective by itself as well as in conjunction with antihistamines like Zyrtec and Claritin, acupuncture reduces inflammation, regulates the immune system, decongests the nasal passages and clogged sinuses, while soothing dryness of the eyes, throat, and nose. If your allergies start around the same time each year, beginning acupuncture treatment a few weeks beforehand would be best in order to nip troublesome symptoms in the bud!

In addition to acupuncture, there are Chinese herbal formulas that specifically target this set of symptoms and can complement the acupuncture treatment thereby boosting your body’s ability to stave off symptom onset. Your acupuncturist will work with you to determine what course of treatment is right for you.

2) Menopause

Acupuncture suits all stages of life, and menopause is no exception. From irregular periods, dryness, and insomnia, to hot flashes, mood swings, and brain fog, acupuncture successfully supports all phases of menopause by regulating hormonal fluctuations and reducing the overall severity of menopausal symptoms. Other lesser known menopausal symptoms such as ear ringing (also known as tinnitus), joint pain, hair thinning, and heart palpitations can also be treated with acupuncture!

The truth is, menopause is a time of great transition and all stages of menopause bring about their own set of complaints an acupuncturist can help alleviate. Whether you’re struggling with irregular periods at the start of perimenopause, sweating through hot flashes in the midst of menopause, or seeking bone and joint support as someone postmenopausal might - acupuncture may just be the modality you need.

3) Acute Injury

Ever taken a tumble down the stairs, sprained an ankle, or wound up with an unsightly bruise? Acupuncture’s unique ability to promote circulation, relieve pain, and reduce swelling means it can work collaboratively with other treatments to help accelerate the healing process for many acute injuries.

Additional acupuncture modalities such as Tui Na massage, gua sha, and cupping, as well as topicals such as moxa (mugwort, a Chinese herb with warming properties) and Evil Bone Water (an herbal analgesic) can be combined with acupuncture for further therapeutic support. Depending on the injury, Celluma LED Light Therapy may also be helpful alongside acupuncture for its ability to reduce inflammation and increase circulation!

Incredibly versatile, non-invasive, and successful at treating a wide variety of ailments, acupuncture is effective for these and many more! (There are even needle-free options with Teishin, one of my specialties!) Whether it’s a change of season, a new stage of life, or an abrupt change of plans, an acupuncture appointment may be just the thing you need for improved health.
