CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY

ABOUT CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY

CranioSacral Therapy (CST) was developed by osteopathic physician John E. Upledger while at Michigan State University where he served as a clinical researcher and Professor of Biomechanics from 1975-1983.

The physiological body system called the craniosacral system is comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. Dr. Upledger developed and adapted CranioSacral Therapy from cranial osteopathy and brought it to a larger therapeutic community. He was interested in exploring not only the function of this system and it’s impact on malfunctions of the brain and spinal cord, but potential treatments for healing it and other areas of the body. Dr. Upledger conducted extensive scientific studies with a multi-disciplinary team, testing both the existence and influence of the craniosacral system. They found that through the release of restrictions in the craniosacral system, the functioning of the central nervous system, as well as many other systems of the body improved (such as the musculoskeletal, circulatory and digestive systems).

Each of our bodies has an innate ability to heal; sometimes we just need a little assistance. An exceptionally gentle therapeutic discipline, CranioSacral Therapists take time to tune in to a body’s tissues and then watch for the body to reveal the map for self-correction and healing to occur. CranioSacral Therapy gently assesses and facilitates optimal body functioning, using a soft touch, generally no greater than 5 grams, to release restrictions in the craniosacral system. CST’s ability to clear the way for innate healing processes means that it’s increasingly used for preventative health or to gently coax the body back to vitality. Some of the healthcare challenges CST has positively effected include:

  • Issues related to the head, skull and jaw, including: migraines, headaches, TMJ and other dental issues, traumatic brain injuries and concussions

  • Auto-immune issues such as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Hashimoto’s Disease

  • Post-traumatic Stress Disorder

  • Central Nervous System Disorders such as Alzheimer’s

  • Issues related to the spine including spinal cord injuries and scoliosis

  • Conception, pregnancy and birth

  • Learning differences such as ADD/ADHD, autism and other sensory processing disorders

  • Orthopedic issues including chronic pain and motor-coordination impairments

  • Emotional health difficulties, such as depression, anxiety, stress and tension-related problems

  • Connective-tissue disorders such as fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis

  • Sleep challenges

As Rebecca is known to say: Re-connect to the wisdom of your body and vitality will follow!
