Let’s delve into The What acupuncture can treat with our team at Serenity Holistic Health, after exploring The How acupuncture works from Traditional Eastern Asian / Chinese Medicine & contemporary medicine perspectives last week (Read Part 1 here).

So, we asked our acupuncture team: What are the most common conditions treated with acupuncture at our clinic?

According to our acupuncturists, they treat a good mix of everything!

This is a data-driven List of the Top 5 Most Common Conditions Treated with Acupuncture at our clinic:

  1. Mental Health

Acupuncture is well known for its calming effect on the nervous system. It positively influences emotions & mental states: Stress, anxiety, depression, anger, grief, overthinking / worrying & fear. According to Traditional Eastern Asian Medicine (TEAM), each organ is associated with a specific emotion. When an imbalance exists within the Meridians, specific emotions may become intensified. Emotional disturbances can further manifest as physical symptoms, highlighting the deep mind-body connection emphasized in TEAM (or Traditional Chinese Medicine)

  1. Insomnia

Sleep is vital for our overall health! Yet, many people have unresolved sleep disturbances or disorders. Whether it’s difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, acupuncture is a powerful modality for addressing the root cause of these imbalances, opposed to just masking symptoms & creating undesired side effects.

According to TEAM / TCM, the root cause of insomnia varies. However, one of the main factors is disruption to the Shen (or our mental-spiritual connection) & this is one of the most important substances within the body. Shen is believed to return to The Heart (via Meridians) by night, but imbalances in the body prevents the mind from turning off & this leads to insomnia.

  1. Musculoskeletal Pain & Headaches

Acute or chronic musculoskeletal pain encompasses any pain in joints, muscles, tendons, or ligaments. Neck & lower back pain tend to be the most common, but acupuncture can benefit any joint in the body! This includes hips, knees, ankles, shoulders & wrists. It works by improving circulation throughout the body, promoting tissue healing & recovery, and decreasing pain signals through the release of endorphins. Various types of headaches (Tension-type, migraines, hormonal, etc) can be managed with routine acupuncture treatments. Some people find greater headache relief from acupuncture than conventional medicine!

  1. Digestive Issues

Digestive issues can look like many different things: Bloating, constipation, loose stool / diarrhea, nausea, IBS & IBD, abdominal pain, etc. Not only do these symptoms impact our day-to-day lives, our gut-brain connection is revolutionizing modern medicine & digestive symptoms are indicators of our overall health! Acupuncture is an impactful way to get digestive health in check. Acupuncture works on the meridians related to digestion, restoring a smooth flow of Qi (Our life-force energy) & blood throughout the body, supporting our body’s ability to overcome illness.

  1. Women’s Health

Acupuncture is a girl’s best friend! Acupuncture is proven to be effective for many menstrual related conditions: Regulating irregular cycles, painful menses, PMS symptoms, hormonal imbalances, fibroids, endometriosis & PCOS. Support during menopause is just as important as the menstruating years, acupuncture does this by treating the root cause & creating internal balance. Acupuncture is a powerful supportive tool throughout fertility & pregnancy as well, resulting in increased success during embryo transfers during IVF & managing pregnancy symptoms.

Acupuncture is Greater than the Condition

Acupuncture is a highly effective treatment option for more than just the conditions discussed above! Here are some more common conditions treated with acupuncture:

  • Headaches & Migraines

  • TMJ Pain / Jaw Dysfunction

  • Neurological Issues

  • PTSD
